Aside from English Language programs, Stewart College offers a comprehensive range of support services for teenage students.
Parents of teenage students are naturally concerned about the well-being of their son or daughter while they are studying in Victoria.
We offer a year-round support program which helps parents keep up to date with the student’s progress at school and in homestay, and provides support for high school selection or in case of emergency.
Our Teen Support program includes:
- Assistance with High School selection and registration, if needed. Stewart College represents the Victoria International High School Program and the Saanich International Student Program. We can assist parents choose the best school for their son or daughter, matching the student's academic strengths and personal interests to the school that will suit them best.
- Custodianship by Stewart College owner, Randy Stewart (see below for details). This means a real commitment and availability to the student in case of emergency.
- Arrival reception and introduction to host family: our staff member will meet the student at the airport and introduce them to their host family, taking care of any issues like lost luggage at the same time.
- Orientation to Victoria, homestay and if applicable, Stewart College
- A support person to accompany the student to meetings at the high school if necessary and feedback on the meetings
- Emergency support, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- A password protected web page for the student which parents can access for contact information about the school, and homestay, as well as regular updates and pictures to keep up to date with how their son/daughter is doing at school and in homestay. This means parents always know who to contact and they have the latest information on their son or daughter's progress at school and at home, as well as a written record that dates back to the student's arrival.
Web updates include reports and photos (when possible) from:
- the followup interview at the host family’s home after arrival
- regular phone calls to talk to the host family and
- regular communication with the student directly to talk about school and home
- regular communication with the student's counsellors at high school and at Stewart College (if the student takes tutoring or homework coaching - see below)
- Information from the student's high school including transcripts of course results etc
See our Teen Program flyer and Course Details flyer for more details.
Stewart College Homestay Placement matches students with carefully selected Canadian families who can provide a safe, comfortable and supportive home-away-from-home for the student. Homestay can be arranged for as short as a week, or for long term placements while students go to a Canadian high school. We have our own full-time homestay coordinator and all families have been carefully screened before being included in our program. For more information about homestay, please visit our Homestay page.
Students who are studying long term in Victoria may need to extend their study permit with Canadian Immigration from time to time. Stewart College will assist with this process.
Students under 19 must have a custodian or guardian while in Canada. This is someone who can sign on the parents’ behalf to give the student permission to do certain activities or to attend excursions. The custodian is also legally responsible for the student and is called on in emergency situations.
For a monthly fee, the owners of Stewart College act as personal Custodians for students attending our school or placed by us in a high school.
See our Course Details and Pricing flyers for more details.
All Stewart College students may join our activity program. Twice a week (or three times a week in summer, October and December), we offer great sightseeing, sports and social activities for students. These activities are offered at minimum cost to help students make friends, see more of Victoria and use their English in natural situations.
Examples of Stewart College activities include: whalewatching, dragonboating, tours of sightseeing attractions, Fondue/Halloween/ Thanksgiving/Christmas parties, sports such as volleyball, soccer, badminton, laser tag.
An activity schedule is posted each month on our website and at school and students can register directly at Reception.
